A great product can still fail if the people who depend on it struggle to use it correctly. In healthcare, use errors are not just frustrating — they can cause harm. Usability testing helps you identify and eliminate those risks before they reach the market.

When your project requires testing in a live clinical environment, partners also offer access to hospital testbeds and other care settings. In both cases, participants are the actual end users your product is designed for.

Testing can be tailored to where you are in development:

Formative testing takes place during design and development. The goal is to observe how users interact with your solution, uncover usability issues, and feed findings back into the design. It is typically iterative — test, adjust, test again.

Summative testing takes place when the design is final or near-final. The goal is to demonstrate that the product can be used safely and effectively by representative users performing representative tasks in a representative environment.

Both types of testing connect directly to risk management: the tasks you test and the criteria you set should reflect the risk profile of your product, so that your usability evidence addresses real use-related hazards.
