About
The Intervention Centre (Intervensjonssenteret, IVS) is a multiprofessional clinical and technological research and development department at Oslo University Hospital, organized under the Division of Technology and Innovation. Established in 1996, the Centre is dedicated to minimally invasive and image-guided diagnostics and therapy, and serves as a shared toolbox for all departments at Oslo University Hospital as well as for others nationally and internationally.
Organization
The Intervention Centre is organized into six sections:
- Clinical Research,
- Radiology Research,
- Anaesthesia Research,
- Medical Cybernetics and Image Processing,
- Information and Communication Technology,
- Medical Treatment Aids
The IVS coordinates a dedicated test facility for research and industrial studies.Contracts and economy in industry-sponsored commissioned studies are handled by Inven2, the Technology Transfer Office of the hospital.
The Intervention Centre is mainly located at Rikshospitalet, one of the sites of Oslo University Hospital located in Oslo, Norway. We collaborate with regional, national, and international partners across Europe and beyond, and welcome industry partners from any geography who wish to develop, test, and validate medical technology in a Nordic university-hospital environment or require a unique transdisciplinary approach.

The infrastructure is used both for clinical and experimental work and includes: hybrid operating rooms equipped for image-guided and minimally invasive procedures (CT, MRI, angiography, ultrasound); preclinical trial, prototype evaluation and simulation environments for surgical workflow and human-factors testing; and clinical wards and outpatient settings at Oslo University Hospital available for clinical studies in collaboration with other hospital departments.
Core competences
Our core competence is the combination of medicine and technology under one roof. The Intervention Centre’s multiprofessional staff includes surgeons, radiologists, anaesthesiologists, nurses, biomedical and clinical engineers, computer scientists, physicists – many of them at PhD level.
Key areas of expertise include minimally invasive and image-guided therapy; medical image processing, segmentation, and AI; visualization for surgery planning and surgical navigation; wireless sensor networks; focused ultrasound; medical cybernetics; clinical study design and execution.
The Intervention Centre is certified to ISO 9001:2015 and since 1996 has accumulated nearly 30 years of experience in clinical innovation.

I'm very proud to be partnering with incredible hospitals and research partners in our mission to advance medical imaging, and improve patient outcomes in surgery.
