About
PICTA - Prehospital Innovation Arena is a knowledge node and a neutral collaboration platform for prehospital care, located at Lindholmen Science Park. PICTA acts as a "triple-helix" link between Emergency Medical Services, academia, the private sector, and public authorities to drive research, innovation, and practical application. PICTA functions as a neutral part to enable and engine solutions for complex societal challenges.
Interest for industry collaboration
PICTA has access to networks and test environments where real user needs from prehospital healthcare actors can help to lower the collaboration barriers between healthcare, academia, and industry.
Projects
PICTA leads several cutting-edge projects and has clear areas of competence and experience well-suited for collaboration.
- AI and Decision Support: Developing AI tools to help prehospital clinicians to detect critical conditions like trauma and stroke to predict appropriate level of care.
- Advanced Video Technology: Utilizing video to improve decision-making by implementing video support during 112 emergency calls and between ambulance personnel and consulting care units.
- Future Workflows and Drones: Exploring how prehospital care must adapt for a future with resource shortages and an aging population, as well as using drones to provide early situational awareness at accident scenes.

Most important criteria for a successful industry collaboration
Cross-Border Collaboration: A genuine commitment to working across traditional sector boundaries (business, healthcare, and academia) where all parties contribute their unique expertise.
Patient Benefit and Societal Value: The solutions developed must have a clear focus on addressing societal challenges, contributing to practical application in healthcare, and creating higher quality, cost-effective, and equitable emergency care for citizens.
Knowledge Sharing and Neutrality: An approach where collaborating partners are willing to share "best practices" and benefit from each other in a neutral environment, to jointly drive the prehospital sector forward.
Geographical area
PICTA was founded and is well established in the Västra Götaland Region, it has expanded in recent years. Today, PICTA's collaborations include the majority of Sweden's healthcare regions and prehospital organizations. A specific geographical focus area is northern Sweden; in Region Norrbotten, a dedicated PICTA innovation node is currently being established to develop solutions tailored to the long distances and challenging weather conditions of the north. Beyond national borders, PICTA actively operates at both the Nordic and EU levels.
Sweden and Norway: Through Interreg projects like PreViS and Kontiki, PICTA collaborates closely with Norwegian partners (e.g., Sykehuset Innlandet, Helseinn and Østfold Univeristy) to strengthen prehospital care in the border region.
